Associate Director, Global Client Services
Joanna Turner is the Associate Director for the London based Global Client Services team. She is responsible for leading the team who manage Control Risks’ relationships with all of our key UK based clients and for managing all of our key oil and gas client relationships. Previously Joanna was the Associate Director for the Africa Global Risks Analysis team and can act as a project manager for complex oil and gas projects in Africa.
Joanna has worked in the sub Saharan Africa region for more than nine years and on the oil and gas industry for 4 years. Some of the projects she has worked on recently are:
- New market entry assessments for a multinational oil and gas company across 15 countries in sub-Saharan Africa.
- Community engagement assessment and strategy for an international mining company.
- Multi-country assessment looking at the threats likely to be faced by an extractive company operating in six sub-Saharan African countries.
Prior to joining Control Risks, Joanna was an Assistant Director at Malachite, a strategic advisory firm focusing on frontier markets. She led Malachite teams across Africa and Asia, and delivered new market assessments and implementation advice for multinationals in the energy, mining and financial services sectors. Joanna also spent seven years in East Africa working for the UN, living in Sudan and Kenya, and has travelled extensively across the continent. She brings deep field experience and a strong network of contacts throughout East and West Africa from her time at the UN. She has also worked at UN Headquarters in New York for UNDP’s Crisis Prevention and Recovery Bureau.
Joanna has an MSc in Human Sciences from Oxford and received an MA (with Distinction) in Violence, Conflict and Development from the School of Oriental and African Studies.
